The airport first opened in 1911 as Oklahoma City Municipal Airfield. It was renamed in Rogers’ honor in 1941. [6]

During World War II, Will Rogers Field was a major training facility for the United States Army Air Forces; many fighter and bomber units were activated and received initial training there.

Army Air Forces groups known to have been stationed at Will Rogers Field include:

After completion of their initial training, these units were reassigned to other airfields for secondary training before deployment overseas.

Post-war [ edit ]

The December 1951 C&GS chart shows four runways: the 5497-ft runway 3, 3801-ft runway 8, 5652-ft runway 12 and 5100-ft runway 17.

The April 1957 OAG showed 21 daily non-stop departures on Braniff International Airways, 15 on American Airlines, five on Central Airlines, four on Continental Airlines and three on TWA. A TWA Constellation aircraft flew non-stop from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles, but eastward non-stops didn’t reach beyond Wichita, Kansas, Tulsa or Dallas, Texas. Oklahoma City began non-stop flights to Chicago starting in 1966.

2000–present [ edit ]

Great Plains Airlines, a regional airline based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, made Will Rogers World Airport a hub in 2001 with non-stop flights to Tulsa, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Colorado Springs, Colorado and direct or connecting flights to Nashville, Tennessee, St. Louis, Chicago, and Washington. The airline had hoped to reach additional East- and West-Coast markets but declared bankruptcy and ceased operations on January 23, 2004.

On May 31, 2013, an EF-1 tornado hit Will Rogers Airport. The 1.4-mile wide tornado traveled 10.4 miles, including across the northern side of the airport. The path of the tornado passed over the facilities of MetroTech, the FAA, the Oklahoma National Guard, AAR, the Four Points Hotel, and the passenger terminal and hangars on the north and east side of the airport. Minor damage was reported at AAR and other buildings in this path. [7] The Parking Spot location north of the airport on Meridian Avenue was also hit by the tornado. The company decided in August 2013 not to re-open the facility and exit the OKC market. [8]

The airport once partnered with Tinker AFB in presenting Aerospace America airshow. [9]

$150 million machines

There are many chipmaking machines in a fab, but the most prestigious are involved in the process of photolithography — translated literally, writing on stone with light. Chips are made by shining ultraviolet light through a very carefully designed mask that selectively blocks the light. The wafer, coated ahead of time with a light-sensitive material called photoresist, is chemically altered where the light strikes.

Lithography is a tricky business since the features on chips have shrunk so small and keep on shrinking a little more every couple years. A process called multiple patterning lets chip designers use several illumination steps, each with its own mask, to create one set of structures that’s finer than the wavelength of light would otherwise permit. It’s so sensitive that fabs are built on geologically stable land and equipment rests on vibration-isolating mounts.

The latest lithography machines, from market leader ASML, cost about $150 million each and blast tiny droplets of tin with lasers to generate ultrahigh frequency light with an ultrashort wavelength. Intel is only beginning to use this extreme ultraviolet lithography process, trailing TSMC and Samsung, but it’s one of the pillars of Gelsinger’s comeback plan.

The rising expense of this equipment is one reason for Moore’s Second Law, which posits that the price of a new fab doubles every four years. Intel’s recovery plan involves $20 billion in new Arizona fabs now under construction, billions more to upgrade fabs in New Mexico, Ireland and Israel, and an eye-watering $200 billion to set up two entirely new «megafab» sites in the US and Europe.

After the patterning, wafers are shuttled to another machine that treats the wafer chemically. Areas of photoresist that were illuminated wash away, exposing materials underneath that are then removed with another chemical process called etching. The remaining protective photoresist is then removed with another chemical process, and the entire cycle repeats for another set of structures.

Fabs run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Even then, it takes about three months to turn a pristine wafer into a finished product studded with dozens, hundreds or even thousands of rectangular chips.

It’s expressive and well-chiseled, and the RDX has finely tuned details that pull a decade’s worth of styling cues (finally) into coherent form.

Acura fastens its caliper badge across the RDX’s grille like a belt buckle, frames it with thinly sliced LED headlights, and flows that into bulging fenders that cap 19-inch or 20-inch wheels. From there, the sailing roofline arcs gracefully toward rear roof pillars that cinch together with a belt of black and metallic trim. It’s a styling trick used by many SUVs to shrink their visual mass, and it works particularly well here.

Acura wraps the RDX interior in sober shades of gray and beige, but buffs it with wood or aluminum trim and synthetic or real leather. A 10.2-inch display studs the dash, but it’s not a touchscreen, and that’s a key reason the RDX’s console bristles with buttons and switches, from the saddle-backed transmission controller to the touchpad that governs said display. Most versions tend toward opulence, but A-Spec RDXs get black upholstery and red accents.
